Gas flow measurement

Every day, hundreds of specialists from various industrial fields face the need to measure gas flow. Various circumstances lead to this necessity, but two main ones can be highlighted – Energy Saving and Process Control.

The most common gas attracting attention in energy-saving programs is compressed air, but other process gases such as Nitrogen (N2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Propane (C3H8), Natural Gas, Oxygen (O2), and various mixtures of these gases (for example, the CO2 and N2 mixture "BIOGON" developed by Linde) should not be overlooked. After all, the more complex the gas production process, the higher its cost for the user, and consequently, the greater the potential for possible savings.

The list of process gases for which flow measurement is required to achieve the desired product quality or process characteristics is even broader: air for combustion, blowing or cooling, gaseous ammonia (NH3), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), Helium (He), Hydrogen (H2), and complex composite mixtures of two, three, or more components.

Gas Meter

flow meter for gas flow measurementWhatever gas flow measurement tasks your production faces, the requirements for gas flow meters will be quite general regardless of the type of gas:

  • High accuracy;
  • Wide measurement range;
  • Reliability;
  • Ease of process connection;
  • Convenient data collection (4-20mA, Ethernet, or Modbus);
  • Competitive cost;
  • Compatibility with the measured gas (or mixture);

All these parameters are met by gas flow meters – thermal anemometric flow meters of the VA 500 and VA 520 series. They can be configured to measure virtually any gas flow (or gas mixture). This configuration can often (for standard gases) be performed by the operator by selecting the gas type from a dropdown list.
