Use of Pressure Sensors with RFID Data Transmission in Quarry Equipment

The Swiss company Keller produces innovative pressure sensors enhanced with RFID wireless data transmission technology.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a data storage and retrieval system that uses radio waves for remote information transmission.

The system consists of two main components:

  • Tag: a silicone element attached to the pressure sensor. The element is passive and powered by the surrounding electromagnetic field.
  • Reader: a device for reading data from the tag.

Overall, the RFID measurement system includes the following:

  • RFID sensors (quantity may vary depending on the task)
  • POCKETwork HF reading device with RFID and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Software for configuring sensors and POCKETwork
  • Software for data viewing and analysis
  • Option: durable and lightweight tablet for industrial applications

Keller offers two types of sensors equipped with an RFID interface. The 21 D RFID sensor is a passive pressure transponder. All parts of the RFID transponder, including the antenna, are housed in the sensor’s plastic cap. The scanner supplies the sensor with enough energy to transmit the current pressure value. The 21 DC RFID sensor is a pressure transponder with an additional built-in data logging function. The built-in battery allows measurements and recording of results. Transmission of stored data is performed via the wireless RFID interface.

RFID-equipped sensors are ideal for use in mining machinery. These sensors have the following advantages:

  • The sensors are completely passive. Therefore, they do not require connection to an external power supply or a built-in battery. This simplifies and speeds up the installation of the devices.
  • Due to the absence of connectors, the sensors have an IP67 protection rating. Combined with a housing made of stainless steel 316L, this makes the sensor extremely reliable and maintenance-free. The sensor design provides high mechanical strength and protection against harsh environmental conditions, increasing the device’s service life.
  • No maintenance requirement significantly reduces costs. Cost savings are also achieved by eliminating the need to purchase additional accessories such as hoses, pressure gauges, and fittings.
  • The absence of hydraulic hoses eliminates the need to top up oil in the system, reduces explosion hazards, and lowers the risk of dirt entering the system. The absence of pressure gauges eliminates the possibility of misreading data (in the case of analog gauges).
  • The sensors look like fittings, reducing the risk of device theft. Moreover, the sensors themselves are useless without the reading device.

If you need a pressure sensor, you can select the required device in our catalog or contact our specialists.
