Measuring Compressor Performance by FAD Using the VD500 Flow Meter

The first step is to install suitable precise compressed air flow meters at all key points of the installation, for example, after each compressor, to obtain reliable data. The devices are installed directly in the pipelines at the compressor outlet. At the first stage, compressed air consumption in the main line is recorded if possible using a data logger, while simultaneously measuring the compressor's energy consumption.

By parallel measurement of consumed power [kWh] and volumetric flow rate of compressed air [m3], the specific power of the compressor in [kWh/m3] can be calculated. Specific power indicates how much energy is consumed to produce one cubic meter of compressed air. Since electricity costs make up the largest part of all expenses related to the operation of the compressed air system, it is recommended to record these values to enable quick response in case of reduced compressed air production efficiency in the future.

The main problem when measuring the performance of a compressed air system by FAD is the harsh conditions in which the flow meter must operate, as well as the possible occurrence of high velocities.

Compressed air at the compressor outlet is usually hotter than during normal compressed air measurements; additionally, condensation may form due to high humidity levels. Under such conditions, devices with just any measurement principle cannot operate.

VD500 Flow Meter allows flow velocity measurements up to 600 m/s and is suitable for use in hot, humid environments. With this flow meter, measurements can be taken at the compressor outlet at temperatures up to 180°C. For measuring system performance by FAD, such a device is an ideal reliable solution.

VD 500 operating principle - measurement of volumetric flow, temperature, and pressure

The built-in precise differential pressure sensor measures the pressure difference / dynamic pressure. Pressure depends on the corresponding gas flow velocity. Flow can be easily determined using the pipe diameter value.

Additional functions of temperature and absolute pressure measurement, as well as calculation of the corresponding density allow measurements for various gases, a wide range of temperatures, and pressures..

For effective measurement of your compressors' performance, we recommend the following devices:

VD5001. VD 500 - Wet compressed air flow sensor

Differential pressure sensor for flow measurement directly after the compressor outlet in humid air up to +200 °C

2. CS PM 5110 Current/Active Power Meter

For panel mounting. Connectable current transformer up to 2000 A.

3. Intelligent recorder DS 500 for compressed air and gases

Capability to connect up to 12 sensors. 7-inch color touchscreen display.
