On the morning of March 8, 1908, demonstrators stood on the streets of New York. The majority were women. This is how women from urban enterprises protested against capitalist exploitation: 12-hour workdays, low wages, and unbearable working conditions.
The demonstration lasted several hours. It seemed that the workers forgot about their fatigue. Everyone was firmly determined not to give up until their demands were met. At the forefront of the international democratic women's movement are women from socialist countries. This is no coincidence, as in these countries, centuries-old inequality and oppression of women have been eliminated. Women here have become equal workers and active members of society. That is why women's equality, their working conditions, and their role in the family and society are a common concern for all honest people on the planet.
The annual celebration of International Women's Day helps to summarize the progress made on this path and to define further tasks in the struggle. March 8 pays tribute to women, their wisdom, beauty, and dignity, and honors the woman-mother. March 8 is an important date for every woman. Preparing to celebrate it, people should know the history of this holiday and understand its great significance.
